If you’re a history lover Plymouth has plenty to offer. Stroll along the Barbican, Plymouth’s historic heart which is home to the England’s largest concentration of cobbled streets and take in Plymouth as it would have looked when the Pilgrims set sail on the Mayflower. Visit the Mayflower Steps to see where they departed for the New World in 1620 and pay a visit to the Mayflower Museum to learn more about their journey.

The home of Plymouth Gin and the historic Blackfriars Distillery a visit to Plymouth wouldn’t be complete without a tour to learn about the history of Plymouth’s favourite tipple – you can even distil your own! Every drop of Plymouth Gin has been distilled on this site since 1793.

Wherever you are in the city the red and white stripes of Smeaton’s Tower are unmissable and the former lighthouse now stands proudly on Plymouth Hoe. Climb the 93 steps to the top for unbeatable views and take time to enjoy the painstakingly restored interior on the way. Whilst you’re on Plymouth Hoe take a moment to enjoy one of the most impressive city parks in the country, with its wide open aspect, beautiful views over Plymouth Sound. Take a stroll along the promenade or sit back and enjoy the view that millions of people – from the Beatles to Sir Francis Drake – have enjoyed before you.

As a city by the sea we’ve got plenty of water to play with too – enjoy anything from sailing to stand up paddle boarding at one of our water sports centres, or if you’re more in the market for a sedate swim take a dip at Tinside Lido, our art deco saltwater swimming pool.

Plymouth makes an amazing stage, whether it’s to celebrate our military roots or to enjoy music, art or theatre. Once you’ve been wowed at one of our incredible events you’ll definitely be keen for more. Enjoy everything from the spectacle of the British Firework Championships every August, to a show at one of the UK’s largest regional theatres and everything in between.
